Soldiers Prevented Terrorist Attack on Benue Communities, Says OPWS Commander
In a daring move to protect the people of Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State, Nigeria, soldiers of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) bravely confronted armed herders in a fierce three-hour gun battle, preventing a potential massacre.
According to Major General Sunday Igbinowanhia, the Force Commander of OPWS, the troops stationed at Akwu in Agatu LGA, had responded to distress calls from the Okokolo community. Reports indicated an impending attack by suspected armed herdsmen. The swift response of the soldiers was instrumental in thwarting the assault and saving countless lives.
Sadly, this heroic act did not come without a cost. Three security personnel lost their lives, comprising two soldiers and one officer from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. Additionally, two soldiers sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at the Nigerian Air Force hospital in Makurdi.
General Igbinowanhia highlighted the determination and resilience of the troops during the engagement. The armed herders, whose exact numbers are yet to be confirmed, suffered heavy casualties and were forced to retreat, abandoning their nefarious mission. The valiant efforts of the soldiers prevented the decimation of the Okokolo community and averted a major humanitarian crisis.
The significance of this operation cannot be overstated, as it underscores the unwavering commitment of the Nigerian military to safeguard vulnerable communities from external threats. The sacrifices made by the fallen and injured soldiers serve as a poignant reminder of the perilous nature of their duties and the selflessness with which they carry them out.
The resolve and gallantry displayed by the soldiers of Operation Whirl Stroke in the face of grave danger exemplify the vital role played by the military in preserving peace and security within the region. Their actions stand as a symbol of hope and resilience, resonating far beyond the borders of Benue State.
