INEC Prepares for Chibok By-Election Amidst Stakeholder Engagement

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is diligently working to ensure a seamless state Assembly by-election in the Chibok constituency of Borno, Nigeria. This comes after the unfortunate passing of the initially declared winner of the 2023 election, late Nuhu Clerk.

In an interview on Monday, INEC’s Public Affairs Officer in Borno, Abba Liberty, revealed that the commission is actively involving all relevant stakeholders in the preparation for the by-election. Engagements have included thorough consultations with participants in the election, particularly the security agencies.

“We have been engaging security agencies and they have assured us of enough security,” Liberty assured.

The upcoming February 3rd by-election will feature several candidates, notably Abdullahi Gambo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hamid Zamzam of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Lawan Pagu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Lawan of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Haruna Shettima of the Action People’s Party (APP), Habila Bello of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Maina Sheriff of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

INEC’s commitment to engaging relevant parties and ensuring adequate security sets the stage for a crucial electoral process in Chibok. As Nigeria anticipates the by-election, the proactive measures taken by INEC signify a significant step towards upholding the democratic principles that underpin electoral processes.
