Members of the Northern Senators Forum, comprising 58 lawmakers, have raised concerns over the allocation of resources in the 2024 budget, claiming it unfairly favors other regions over the North. Their discontent also extends to the relocation of certain federal agencies to Lagos.
In a statement titled “Allocation and distribution of funds in 2024 National Budget and Relocation of some Federal Agencies to Lagos,” spokesperson Senator Suleiman Kawu Sumaila (NNPP Kano South) emphasized the forum’s commitment to addressing the grievances of their constituents in the North. They indicated a willingness to pursue legal recourse if necessary.
The senators expressed their determination to engage constructively with the government to resolve these issues, emphasizing the importance of fostering a harmonious relationship between the government and its citizens. They underscored the significance of their role as intermediaries between the people and the government.
The forum recognized the patience and trust bestowed upon them by their constituents and urged for continued support and understanding as they navigate these critical concerns. They pledged to explore avenues for dialogue, engage in peaceful negotiations, and utilize legal measures where required.
The N28.7 trillion 2024 budget, which received third reading approval from the National Assembly in December 2023 and was subsequently assented to by President Bola Tinubu in January 2024, remains at the center of this controversy.
As the forum continues to advocate for equitable resource distribution and address the grievances of the Northern region, the spotlight now turns to the ongoing dialogue and collaborative efforts between the senators and the Federal Government, with implications for the nation’s future.
