The call has been made by South Africa’s Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, for citizens to voice their opinions and recommendations on the upcoming National Budget, scheduled to be presented in February 2024.

The ministry seeks input on a range of crucial financial aspects, including municipal finances, government spending priorities, managing the budget deficit, stabilizing state-owned entity finances, addressing the energy crisis, as well as tax revenues and debt sustainability. The deadline for submissions is set for 11th February 2024.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Finance, it was affirmed, “The budget allocation aims to strike a balance between growing the economy and supporting the vulnerable amid limited resources. It is in this context that Minister Godongwana invites South Africans to share their suggestions on the Budget. Minister Godongwana looks forward to your contributions.”

Contributions are encouraged to be made through the National Treasury website, and citizens are advised to keep their submissions brief and to the point.

To engage in the dialogue, the Ministry of Finance has encouraged the use of social media, urging the public to tag them on platforms such as LinkedIn, TikTok, and Facebook with the hashtags #TipsForMinFin and #Budget2024.

This call for public engagement displays a commitment to inclusive governance, as the Ministry of Finance actively seeks to gather diverse perspectives and insights in the decision-making process. It is a demonstration of the government’s openness to listening and considering the voices of its citizens, ensuring that the National Budget reflects the real needs and aspirations of the people of South Africa.
