A fierce inferno ravaged the GSM market, known as “Kasuwar Jagwal,” in Damaturu, Yobe, resulting in the destruction of properties estimated to be worth N150 million. The blaze, which erupted at dawn, consumed no fewer than 30 shops before it was brought under control by the fire service.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Yobe State Fire Service, investigations indicated that the fire was ignited by a surge in electricity supply to the area. This distressing incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance for the public to diligently switch off electrical appliances and unplug cables from power sources before retiring for the night or closing their shops for the day.
The Chairman of the Damaturu Trader’s Association, Alhaji Ali Sheriff, lamented the staggering loss of goods worth N150 million suffered by traders in the market. He echoed the suspicion that an electrical fault may have triggered the devastating blaze.
Meanwhile, the inadequacy of firefighting resources became apparent as Ali revealed that the firefighters’ efforts were hampered by a faulty water pump, impeding their ability to swiftly extinguish the flames. However, the presence of police personnel at the scene helped thwart any attempts of pilfering by miscreants, safeguarding the remaining goods of the affected traders.
Yahya Ngubdo, a sorghum trader, disclosed that the market’s commodity section incurred a significant blow, with 130 bags of goods lost to the fire. He urgently appealed to the state government and compassionate individuals to extend support to the impacted traders, alleviating their substantial losses in the wake of this calamity.
