Peace Accord Signed as Jigawa Gears Up for Federal Constituency Rerun Election

In preparation for the upcoming rerun election in the Buji/Birnin Kudu Federal Constituency, political parties in Jigawa State came together to sign a peace accord on Tuesday. The event, organized by the Jigawa State Police Command, saw the participation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Scheduled for Saturday, February 3, 2024, the rerun election is the culmination of a series of events stemming from the inconclusive February 25, 2023, election of the Birnin Kudu/Buji federal constituency, as decreed by the election tribunal in Dutse, Jigawa State. The Court of Appeal later affirmed this decision.

The initial election results had declared Adamu Yakubu of the PDP as the winner with 39,998 votes, defeating Magaji Da’u of the APC, who secured 36,735 votes. However, the subsequent legal proceedings led to the current scenario of a rerun election.

Speaking at the peace accord signing, Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, emphasized the commitment of the police force to maintaining a neutral and non-partisan stance. He further pledged to ensure a level playing field for all parties and warned against any disruptive behavior during the electoral process.

With the electoral landscape in Jigawa poised for a potentially transformative event, the signing of the peace accord represents a crucial step toward fostering a conducive and secure environment for the rerun election. As the nation looks on, anticipation and tension are on the rise, with the outcome of this electoral exercise expected to reverberate throughout the Nigerian political terrain.
