Nigeria: Surge in Passport Applications Signals Desire for Emigration

Amid a surge in the desire to seek opportunities abroad, a staggering 32,462 Nigerians have applied for international passports within a mere two-week period from January 8 to 21, 2024. This unprecedented mass application, reflects the yearning for new beginnings beyond the nation’s borders.

The Nigeria Immigration Service revealed that out of the total applications, 15,113 have already been approved for biometric capture and production. This rapid processing accounts for fifty per cent of the applications, signifying the urgency and determination among the applicants.

Caroline Adepoju, the Comptroller-General of Immigration Service, highlighted that 11,505 applications await approval, while 3,406 applicants who have made payments are yet to secure appointments. Additionally, 1,438 applications have been placed on hold for various reasons, underscoring the complexities and challenges within the application process.

Adepoju emphasized the significance of the recent shift towards an automated passport application process. She affirmed that the innovation primarily involves the online uploading of supporting documents, a decision rooted in extensive research, and marked by significant accomplishments.

Furthermore, the Immigration boss reassured the public regarding the rejection of uploaded documents, citing a meager four per cent rejection rate, often attributed to minor errors on the part of the applicants. Adepoju assured applicants of uninterrupted support through their operational help desk, operational round-the-clock.

This modernization initiative, championed by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, aims to streamline the passport application process, diminish human interface, and eradicate the exploitation of applicants by middlemen.

In conclusion, Adepoju implored patience from Nigerians, urging them to trust the Nigeria Immigration Service as they strive to refine and perfect the new automated passport application system, ensuring a seamless and fair process for all aspirants.
