Muzuva’s ambitions are, however, marred by uncertainty due to her immigrant status. Having moved from Zimbabwe in 2012, her access to university education hinges on obtaining a study permit from Home Affairs, a hurdle compounded by the ineligibility for most local bursaries and scholarships. Her father, a waiter, earns modestly, making it arduous to finance her tertiary education. Yet, his unwavering determination to support her dreams reflects the profound parental love and sacrifice.
Similarly, Lilitha Masizana, another top achiever from Sinenjongo High School, exemplifies fortitude in the face of adversity. Her pursuit of higher education, despite living in the challenging conditions of Dunoon’s Ekhupholweni informal settlement, showcases the indomitable spirit of these young South Africans.

Sinenjongo High School, despite facing numerous challenges such as high crime rates and economic hardships exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has demonstrated remarkable success, with an 88.7% matric pass rate in 2023. Principal Khuselwa Nopote’s acknowledgment of the students’ diligence and the teachers’ unwavering support reflects a steadfast commitment to nurturing academic excellence despite the odds.
