Zimbabwean Court Delays Verdict in Sikhala’s False Communication Case

The Harare Magistrates Court has rescheduled Job Sikhala’s verdict for February 7 in a case where he is charged with disseminating false information. Prosecutors submitted closing arguments on the day of the hearing, prompting Magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka to defer the judgement due to time constraints.

Sikhala stands accused of using X (previously Twitter) to allege that a police officer fatally struck a baby with a baton during a road traffic operation. Additionally, he faces another impending verdict related to his previous incarceration alongside CCC MP Godfrey Sithole. This case pertains to the alleged incitement of public violence in Nyatsime following the tragic death of opposition activist Moreblessing Ali.

Expressing solidarity, opposition figures Tendai Biti, Charlton Hwende, and Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi attended the court session. Biti expressed dismay at Sikhala’s predicament, condemning the purported misuse of power to prosecute him on unsubstantiated charges. Anti-riot police monitored the courthouse, while a small group of activists staged impromptu protests, demanding Sikhala’s immediate release.

The postponement triggered protests outside Rotten Row court, further underscoring the public interest in Sikhala’s cases. The saga continues, with national and international observers closely following the unfolding events.
