The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is gearing up for the rerun elections in Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo and Orumba North/Orumba South federal constituencies in Anambra on February 3.

Dr. Elizabeth Agwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), announced the commission’s readiness during a media briefing at the INEC headquarters in Awka. The rerun follows a court order that nullified the election in 21 polling units across the two federal constituencies.

Agwu specified that the rerun election will take place in five polling units across four wards in Nnewi North, as well as 16 polling units and one ward in Orumba North. She emphasized that INEC in Anambra had taken substantial measures to ensure the election is conducted credibly, freely, and fairly.

Notably, the REC pointed out that there is currently no declared winner until after the rerun elections for the federal constituency candidates. She urged the 97,438 registered voters in the affected local government areas to actively participate in the electoral process.

Moreover, Agwu called on the 161,914 registered voters in Orumba North and South to exercise their voting rights on February 3 and choose their preferred candidates. She affirmed that tight security measures will be in place before, during, and after the election, emphasizing the commission’s collaboration with security agencies to ensure the safety of voters exercising their franchise.
