Governor Lawal Urges Northern Governors to Unite in Tackling Insecurity

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has underscored the importance of a united and comprehensive regional strategy to combat the insecurity plaguing Northern Nigeria. At a two-day roundtable organized by the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) on insecurity in Northern Nigeria, Governor Lawal emphasized the need for a synchronized effort among Northern governors to address the escalating security challenges.

During the event held at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, Governor Lawal, alongside other governors, partook in discussions focusing on critical aspects of concern. The topics ranged from establishing a framework for cooperation and collaboration between Federal, State, and Local authorities to devising approaches for countering the proliferation of arms and drugs through local vigilance and border security measures.

In a statement released by Zamfara State governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, Governor Lawal reaffirmed that a multi-dimensional approach is essential to confront the insecurity prevalent in the Northern region. He stressed the significance of collaboration and a united front in combating security challenges, particularly emphasizing the need to work collectively with neighboring states to address the issue.

Governor Lawal articulated, “For us in Zamfara State, we also believe that a multi-dimensional approach is the way to go; however, for Zamfara State, in tandem with our border and regional States, we have also resolved to work together and tackle the issue using a regional approach and not operate in silos. This will enhance synergy among the States affected in combating the security challenges.”

He further expounded on the proactive measures being employed in Zamfara State, including the establishment of Community Protection Guards and a Security Trust Fund to mobilize resources and complement government efforts in restoring security. Governor Lawal highlighted the critical role of community engagement in the fight against banditry and related crimes, emphasizing the importance of targeted interventions to address the root causes of insecurity, such as the devaluation of education and high youth unemployment.

Governor Lawal’s call for collaborative action and his commitment to a multi-dimensional approach underscores the gravity of the security situation in Northern Nigeria. His remarks serve as a rallying cry to the Northern governors and stakeholders to unite in their efforts to establish a robust and holistic framework for addressing the complex challenges of insecurity in the region.
