The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has vehemently rebutted claims of disobedience to court orders by the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Ground Alliance (APGA), Chief Chekwas Okorie. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, firmly asserted INEC’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and abiding by legal directives.
Mr. Oyekanmi dismissed the allegations leveled by Chief Chekwas Okorie as “pure mischief.” He clarified that the matter at hand pertains to the leadership dispute within APGA, in which Okorie is not directly involved. Furthermore, he emphasized that Okorie’s portrayal of events was a distorted narrative aimed at unjustly targeting the Chairman of INEC.
In response to Chief Okorie’s statement regarding INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu’s alleged contempt of court, Mr. Oyekanmi stated that there is a misrepresentation of facts. He highlighted that the allegations were baseless, asserting that the matter is currently under review by a superior court. Additionally, Mr. Oyekanmi cautioned Okorie against making unsubstantiated and malicious claims.
The Chief Press Secretary underscored the necessity of setting the record straight for the benefit of the public. He further emphasized that diligent scrutiny of the legal proceedings would have offered Chief Okorie a more accurate understanding of the situation.
In summary, INEC’s response refutes the allegations of contempt of court and underscores the organization’s unwavering dedication to upholding legal directives while urging caution against unfounded accusations.
