In a recent statement, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has identified gas constraints at thermal generating companies as the primary cause of the nationwide drop in power supply. According to Ndidi Mbah, the general manager of public affairs at TCN, the limited availability of gas has significantly impacted the transmission grid’s bulk power, which in turn affects distribution load centres across the country.

Mbah emphasized that the dwindling power generation due to gas constraints has compelled TCN to work collaboratively with stakeholders in the power sector to maintain grid stability, despite the challenges. As a result of the decreased load on the grid, distribution to load centres has been curtailed, as TCN can only transmit the available generated power.

Acknowledging the predicament, TCN assured its commitment to gradually bolstering electricity supply to load centres once gas availability improves at the thermal plants. The company also appealed for patience from electricity consumers nationwide as they continue to engage with stakeholders in the power value chain to enhance supply through distribution companies.

Simultaneously, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company noted that the current reduction in supply hours within its franchise states (Delta, Edo, Ekiti, and Ondo States) is a consequence of uncontrollable constraints, specifically citing limitations in national allocation.
