Tragedy Strikes: Over 50 Lives Lost and N215 Million in Properties Destroyed in Jigawa State Fires in 2023

A devastating toll has been exacted by fire incidents in Jigawa State, with over 50 lives lost and properties worth N215 million destroyed in the year 2023. This harrowing revelation was made by Ibrahim Gumel, the State Director of the Fire Service Directorate, during a press briefing on the agency’s accomplishments.

Gumel somberly stated that the fire service responded to a staggering 160 fire calls and 45 rescue calls from various parts of the state. In the face of these challenges, the agency heroically saved 250 lives and property worth over N755 million across the state in 2023, encompassing fires, drownings, and road accidents.

In light of these heart-rending losses, Gumel issued a poignant appeal to the public, urging them to exercise extreme caution when dealing with fire and electricity appliances, particularly during the dry, dusty weather conditions of the harmattan season. The stark realities of these tragedies serve as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and vigilance in the community.
