Nigerian security forces have dealt a significant blow to the activities of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in Imo State, as they successfully destroyed an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) factory and dismantled several terrorist hideouts. The collaborative operation involved the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, and civil defence corps, showcasing a coordinated effort to combat insecurity in the region.
In a statement, Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, Acting Deputy Director of the 82 Division Army Public Relations, revealed the successful destruction of the terrorist hideouts despite encountering multiple IEDs. Additionally, the troops uncovered signs of occultism and cannibalism in certain buildings used by the terrorists, shedding light on the extent of the threat they pose.
The operation also led to the discovery of Biafran currencies, fake US Dollar bills, Biafran Liberation Army T-shirts, and other Biafran insignia, emphasizing the scale of the illicit activities being conducted by the outlawed group. The recovery of kidnapped policemen’s rank badges, military kit bags, and equipment used for IED detonation further demonstrates the gravity of the situation.
Amidst these successes, the security forces thwarted a kidnapping attempt in Owerri during a night patrol, engaging suspected IPOB/ESN terrorists in a gun duel and rescuing a victim. Substantial weaponry, including AK 47 rifles and a vehicle, were recovered, underscoring the determination of the security forces in quelling the activities of these criminal elements.
Furthermore, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) the division, visited the Isiuzo-Amufu community in Enugu State to underscore the imperative of civil-military relations in fostering a peaceful society. He emphasized the need for cooperation between the military and local communities to address insecurity, farmer-herder conflicts, and youth restiveness, signaling a commitment to restoring peace and stability in the region.
The GOC’s engagement with personnel of other security agencies and his call for collaboration highlights the importance of a unified approach in tackling security challenges. He reiterated the Nigerian Army’s dedication to safeguarding the South-East region and urged the public to provide timely and credible information to support ongoing security efforts.
As the security forces continue to fulfill their constitutional mandate and prioritize the protection of lives and property, they rely on the support and collaboration of the South-East residents. Through sustained cooperation and information sharing, a safer and more secure environment can be achieved, affirming the commitment of the Nigerian Army to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the well-being of the populace.
