In a recent statement, Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the presidential committee on Fiscal Policy and Reforms, debunked rumors suggesting that the federal government, under President Bola Tinubu, was considering recruiting “Area boys” as tax collectors. Oyedele emphasized that his previous comments had been misinterpreted and taken out of context.
Contrary to speculations, Oyedele stressed that the committee does not intend to hire individuals for a role they are already performing. Instead, the focus is on promoting tax harmonization and eliminating multiple levies to facilitate a more conducive business environment.
During an interview on Channels Television, Oyedele underscored the importance of garnering support from those currently involved in tax collection, particularly those who derive personal benefits beyond their official earnings. However, he clarified that his remarks were distorted, emphasizing that he did not mention any plans to recruit or employ new tax collectors.
Notably, Oyedele had previously announced the government’s intent to suspend multiple taxation in a concerted effort to enhance the ease of doing business in Nigeria.
