In a significant move to prioritize public health and environmental sustainability, the Abia State Ministry of Environment has issued a ban on the use of Styrofoam foils, popularly referred to as ‘Take Away’ containers. Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, emphasized the potential dangers associated with the use of these products, echoing similar actions taken by other states such as Lagos. The ministry has urged the public to immediately cease the use of these foils pending further investigations into their impact on public health.

During the January 2024 Clean Up exercise in Umuahia, the state capital, authorities took action against individuals who failed to comply with the ban. This resulted in the arrest and sanctioning of defaulters found trading or loitering during the designated environmental sanitation hours. Despite these enforcement efforts, the clean up witnessed a commendable level of compliance, with many residents actively participating by cleaning their gutters, supported by state-provided waste evacuation trucks.

The ban on ‘Take Away’ foils reflects a growing global trend towards reducing plastic and non-biodegradable waste. By taking this proactive step, Abia State sets an example for other regions to prioritize sustainable alternatives and environmental consciousness. This ban not only addresses immediate health concerns but also contributes to the broader goal of fostering a cleaner and healthier living environment for all residents.
