Nigeria Sends Cameroon Packing: Captain Aboubakar Voices Frustration

Cameroon’s hopes of clinching the AFCON 2023 title were shattered after a disappointing 2-0 loss to Nigeria in the Round of 16, leaving team captain Vincent Aboubakar in a state of dejection.

The Indomitable Lions, led by Rigobert Song, were unable to match the prowess of the Super Eagles, marking an early exit from the competition. Despite dominating possession, the five-time champions failed to deliver a single shot on target.

Aboubakar, who made his first appearance in the tournament during this crucial game, expressed his dismay at the defeat. Sidelined due to an injury during the preliminary rounds, he was disheartened by the team’s inability to overcome their Nigerian rivals.

“The feeling can only be negative. Today we found an even tougher opponent. You know that Nigeria isn’t an easy team,” shared Aboubakar with reporters. “Cameroon dominated in terms of possession but small errors cost us the match. It’s football; there’s nothing we can do about it.”

Acknowledging the disappointment, he noted, “We will just get up and prepare for the next games. It’s sad that now we will be spectators of the AFCON.”

The defeat has undoubtedly been a devastating blow for the Indomitable Lions, leaving their fans and the nation in a state of somber reflection as they contemplate an early exit from this highly anticipated tournament.
