NiMet Forecasts 3-Day Dust Haze Blanket Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has issued a weather forecast warning of an impending three-day dust haze engulfing the country from Monday to Wednesday.

According to NiMet’s weather outlook released on Sunday, it anticipates moderate dust haze with a horizontal visibility range of 2km to 5km over the northern region. Similarly, the North Central region is expected to experience a similar level of dust haze, with visibility potentially dropping to less than or equal to 1000m.

The forecast extends to the southern inland and coastal areas, projecting a continuation of the dust haze throughout the mentioned period.

On Tuesday, NiMet expects the northern region to experience moderate dust haze with a visibility range of 2km to 5km. This level is also expected over the North Central area, albeit with potential localized visibility reduction.

NiMet further warns of thick dust haze looming over the entire northern region during this forecast period.

The agency issued a cautionary advisory, urging the populace to be mindful of the suspended dust particles, recommending the use of face masks where possible. Individuals with respiratory conditions, such as asthma, are advised to exercise caution. Additionally, NiMet advised children and the elderly to don warm clothing during the nighttime and to pay special attention to their skin, eyes, and lips. Moisturization of the skin and lips is recommended as a preventive measure.

Furthermore, NiMet alerted airline operators to stay abreast of updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet to facilitate effective operational planning.
