The tranquility of Ejigbo in Osun state was shattered on Saturday with the tragic killing of Dr. Richard Adeoriokin, a Nigerian lecturer based in the United States. According to the Osun State police spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, a suspect has been apprehended in connection with the murder.

The incident took place shortly after the 50th coronation anniversary celebration of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin. Allegedly, Prince Eniola Oyeyode instructed his civilian guard, Hammed Jelili, to test-fire a double-barrel gun. However, instead of firing into the air as instructed, Jelili aimed at Dr. Adeoriokin, leading to his tragic demise upon arrival at the hospital.

Osun’s Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered a prompt investigation into the lecturer’s killing, emphasizing the need for law enforcement agencies to thoroughly probe the circumstances surrounding the incident. Additionally, the governor urged calm in the community and warned against any potential outbreak of violence, dispatching a high-level delegation to Ejigbo to restore calm.

In response to this unfortunate event, Governor Adeleke has directed the police to issue guidelines for the responsible use of local firearms, particularly during public gatherings, in a bid to bolster citizen safety and security.

The loss of Dr. Adeoriokin underscores the urgency of addressing the underlying issues that led to this senseless act, and the call for justice and preventive measures resonates beyond the borders of Osun State. As the investigation unfolds, the hope for both justice and the restoration of peace in Ejigbo and its environs remains paramount.
