The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) in Malawi has reported a concerning surge in the death toll resulting from various disasters during this year’s rainy season. The toll, initially reported as five on January 9, has now tragically climbed to eight, with the latest count including fatalities from lightning strikes and floods.
Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Charles Kalemba, disclosed that five out of the eight deaths were attributed to lightning strikes, while the remaining three were caused by floods. Additionally, the number of affected households has risen from 4,751 to 4,989, underscoring the widespread impact of the ongoing crisis in the region.
Furthermore, Dodma has revealed that the total number of injuries, predominantly caused by stormy rains, remains at 46. Currently, the organization has extended assistance to 4,868 households, comprising approximately 21,906 individuals, representing 97 per cent of those affected. The aid provided includes essential provisions such as maize, beans, blankets, pails, and plastic sheets.
As Malawi grapples with the grim realities of these rain-related disasters, the government and humanitarian agencies continue their efforts to mitigate the impact on the affected population.
