In the lead-up to Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash with Angola, former Super Falcons coach Godwin Izilein has voiced strong criticism of Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi. Izilein highlighted Iwobi’s tendency to lose possession easily and his perceived lack of defensive contribution, accusing him of “going to sleep” without the ball.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria in Calabar, Izilein emphasized the improved understanding and synergy within Jose Peseiro’s team. He noted a shift towards collective responsibility, where players cover for each other and acknowledge mutual accountability.
Expressing dissatisfaction with Iwobi’s performance, Izilein remarked, “The only snag is that Alex Iwobi has really not been fully into this tournament. He loses possession easily and does not defend and cover up for his colleagues. Iwobi only plays when he has the ball and goes to sleep when he is not.”
Despite his critique, Izilein expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to overcome Angola, projecting a favorable outcome for their upcoming match.
