The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has thrown its weight behind the establishment of state police, citing it as a viable solution to the current security crises facing the country. The forum, led by Bala Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi State, made this declaration during a visit to Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau at the Government House in Jos.
Governor Mohammed highlighted the pressing security challenges across the nation and emphasized that state police would complement the efforts of existing security agencies. He stressed that state police would empower governors to effectively manage security within their respective states. Furthermore, he emphasized that decentralizing the security apparatus would facilitate better governance by implementing state police.
Governor Mohammed also affirmed the PDP’s unwavering commitment to good governance, despite the limited resources at their disposal, and assured that residents of PDP-controlled states would continue to benefit from democratic dividends.
In response, Governor Mutfwang expressed gratitude for the solidarity visit and underscored the importance of such gestures in bolstering the populace’s resolve. He attributed the severity of the current insecurity to the failures of previous administrations in addressing the issue, emphasizing the need to rebuild trust among the people.
The visit included Governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun, Sheyi Makinde of Oyo State, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, Peter Mbah of Enugu State, and Godwin Obaseki of Edo, demonstrating a united front in advocating for state police.
As a show of support, the forum donated N100 million to the Plateau Government to aid the victims of recent attacks in the state.
