The trial of suspected serial killer Denis Kazungu, 34, from Kicukiro District in Kigali, has been postponed for the third time. The Nyarugenge Intermediate Court in Rwanda has rescheduled the hearing on February 9 after the latest delay caused by a general meeting held at the court.
Kazungu was arrested by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) in September 2023 on suspicion of multiple murders, with victims allegedly buried in a pit in his kitchen. He faces 10 charges including murder, rape, desecration of human remains, and assault.
During the previous hearing on January 12, Kazungu’s lawyer, Faustin Murangwa, expressed the need for more time to prepare for the trial, stating that they would be ready after the week. The prosecutors supported the postponement, emphasizing the defendant’s right to legal representation and the lawyer’s right to adequate time for defense preparation.
The trial also involves individuals seeking compensation for the loss of their loved ones and property. Some of them were present at the court but were informed of the trial’s postponement.
The ongoing postponement of Kazungu’s trial reflects the complexities and legal intricacies surrounding the case, impacting the families of victims and the wider community awaiting justice.
