The Nigerian government is taking steps to address the recent drop in power supply that has affected parts of the country. Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, announced that a committee will be formed to work with all stakeholders in finding solutions to the problem.

Following a meeting with Electricity Distribution and Generation Companies in Abuja, Mr. Adelabu stated that the committee’s goal would be to make recommendations for resolving the issues causing power blackouts and ensuring a more reliable and consistent power supply for citizens.

He highlighted the low supply of gas to power Generating Companies (GenCos) as the main cause of the poor power supply, emphasizing that resolving the gas supply issue is a top priority for the Ministry of Power. Mr. Adelabu also expressed plans to collaborate with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources to prioritize gas supply to power and address the challenges faced by GenCos in contractual arrangements with gas suppliers.

During the meeting, the Minister also addressed the indebtedness to GenCos by the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET), acknowledging the sector’s liquidity challenge and committing to validating the debt and determining a fair resolution.

Mr. Adelabu reassured the public of the ministry’s unwavering commitment to resolving the challenges affecting power supply and stabilizing the power sector. He expressed appreciation for citizens’ patience and emphasized collaborative efforts towards a brighter and more reliable energy future for Nigeria.
