Tragedy struck in Borno State as four police officers were reportedly killed during an attack on a police station in Nganzai Local Government Area. Suspected fighters of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) stormed the police station at Gajiram town, opening fire on the policemen on duty and setting parts of the station ablaze. The assailants also made off with a cache of ammunition, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake.

An anonymous security source revealed the harrowing details of the assault, expressing disbelief at the outnumbering and overpowering of the policemen on duty. “Some of the police officers were lucky to have survived the onslaught, but the unfortunate four officers paid the supreme price while on active duty,” the source disclosed, capturing the chaos and tragedy that unfolded.

Borno State, despite efforts of the military and joint security operatives, continues to grapple with severe attacks from insurgents and terrorists. The state’s vulnerability to such heinous activities remains a pressing concern, echoing the challenges faced by the region in maintaining peace and security.

Even the arrival of military reinforcement, prompted by a local vigilante group’s alert, was not enough to apprehend the assailants, who fled before the reinforcements could secure the area. The swift response of security agents and the subsequent restoration of normalcy in the town were overshadowed by the loss of four brave officers in the line of duty.

Speaking on the tragic events, ASP Nahum Kenneth, the Borno State Police Command spokesman, confirmed the attack and the loss of four colleagues, stating, “Four policemen indeed paid the supreme price in an exchange of fire with the terrorists. Normalcy has since been restored in the town.”
