Sudan Condemns Unjust US Sanctions

In a strong rebuke, the Sudanese government has condemned the recent sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department. The sanctions were directed at the Zadna International Company, allegedly affiliated with the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF). The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Port Sudan defended Zadna as the country’s largest national agricultural company, contributing significantly to Sudan’s food security.

The US measures aimed to target entities involved in undermining Sudan’s peace, security, and stability amidst ongoing conflict leading to the displacement of 11 million people. In response, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the crucial role of the SAF in safeguarding national security, sovereignty, and regional peace. It criticized the US decision and argued that targeting national institutions under the pretext of their affiliation with the SAF weakens the country and amplifies the risks of terrorism and border crimes.

Furthermore, the ministry reiterated its stance on distinguishing the national army from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and highlighted their efforts to combat terrorism and protect civilians. Meanwhile, the Darfur Bar Association appreciated international actions against impunity in Sudan but questioned their efficacy. This tension between the US and Sudan reflects broader geopolitical complexities and ongoing struggles within the region.
