Sunday Oliseh, former head coach of the Super Eagles, has cautioned the team to prepare thoroughly for their upcoming match against South Africa in the AFCON semifinals. The match is scheduled to take place at the Stade de la Paix on Wednesday.
Oliseh emphasized the threat posed by South Africa, describing them as a dangerous side with a strong counter-attacking strategy. He advised the Super Eagles to avoid letting the game reach a penalty shootout, highlighting the prowess of the South African goalkeeper who has a reputation for saving penalties.
“South Africa are a compact and dangerous team on the attack,” Oliseh stated during a Channels TV interview. “They have the ability to exploit our weaknesses, and we cannot afford to underestimate them. Additionally, we must ensure that the game does not come down to a penalty shootout due to their goalkeeper’s exceptional abilities in saving penalties.”
The upcoming match holds significance as it will be the first meeting between South Africa and Nigeria at the AFCON since the 2000 edition, which Nigeria co-hosted with Ghana. During the 2000 encounter, the Super Eagles emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over South Africa in the semifinals, with Tijani Babangida scoring both goals.
The warning issued by Oliseh serves as a reminder for the Super Eagles to approach the match with strategic precision and to be mindful of the potential threats posed by their opponents.
