The Minister of Youths, Jamila Ibrahim, has announced that the Nigerian government has ceased deploying members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to unsafe states, following the recent abduction of some corps members during their national service.
In an interview with Channels TV, Ms Ibrahim emphasized that the NYSC has taken proactive measures to prevent such incidents in the future. She stated, “We have actually stopped posting corps members to the very unsafe states. We have been doing it in the past. There are states we have not been posting corps members to, to ensure their safety.”
Highlighting the importance of collaboration with other government agencies for the security of corps members, she added, “When it comes to security matters, it is a multi-sectoral approach. So, it is not the NYSC alone and the ministry that is involved. We are working with security outlets to ensure corps members are safe.”
Furthermore, the minister revealed that the government is developing group transportation strategies to ensure safe travel for corps members to and from camps, as well as to their destinations.
Ms Ibrahim also addressed ongoing reforms within the NYSC scheme, particularly in the realm of remuneration. “We are looking at the holistic funding of the NYSC. We want the scheme to go beyond being a social programme of the government. The reforms will actually transform the NYSC into a revenue-generating agency and prepare corps members for the job market,” she explained.
The move underscores the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of NYSC members, while concurrently seeking to enhance the overall effectiveness and sustainability of the program.
