Tragedy Strikes Ghana: Fatal Accident Claims 7 Lives and Injures 4 on Accra-Nsawam Road

A horrifying accident on the Accra-Nsawam road in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana has resulted in the loss of seven lives and left four others injured. The calamity occurred when a fuel tanker collided with a Toyota Hiace mini-bus near China Mall at Sapeiman, in the Ga West Municipality.

The victims, yet to be identified, include four males and three females. The injured individuals, one of whom is a police officer, were swiftly taken to Amasaman Hospital for urgent medical attention.

The incident transpired at approximately 5:30 pm, as the fuel tanker, en route from Tema in Greater Accra to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, collided with the Toyota Hiace bearing passengers from Pokuase to Asamankese in the Eastern Region.

The horrifying scene drew a large crowd, with onlookers aiding the rescue efforts to free trapped victims from the mangled mini-bus. Emotions ran high, as witnesses wailed inconsolably, while some documented the harrowing aftermath through photos and videos.

Personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service promptly arrived to rescue the injured and transport them to Amasaman Hospital, before transferring them to the Police Hospital.

Eyewitnesses claim that the tanker’s brakes allegedly failed, leading to the devastating collision that resulted in loss of lives and injuries. ACP Francis Somian, the Amasaman Divisional Police Commander, confirmed the tragic event, stating that the deceased have been taken to the Police Hospital’s mortuary pending autopsy. The tanker’s driver, Theophilus Nartey, was apprehended and subsequently released on police bail pending further investigations. The wrecked vehicle has since been removed from the accident site.

Investigations into the root cause of the accident continue, as the community mourns the loss and hopes for swift justice and safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
