The Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has issued a crucial advisory to Nigerian exporters, emphasizing the significant impact of individual export failures on the broader export community. It stressed the need for exporters to prioritize the quality and standards of their products intended for the international market, as rejections can detrimentally affect the entire sector.
During a 1-Day Interactive Sensitisation Forum for newly registered exporters in Cross River State, Dr. Osas Damain, the NEPC Coordinator, urged aspiring exporters to first establish a successful local business foundation before venturing into international trade. He emphasized the essentiality of understanding the intricacies of the international market, emphasizing the importance of product suitability, safety, quality, and packaging for specific target markets.
Dr. Damain highlighted the repercussions of export contract cancellations due to failure or disappointment, underscoring that such setbacks not only impact the individual exporter but also the nation as a whole, creating obstacles for other exporters seeking similar opportunities.
Furthermore, Commissioner for Commerce in the state, Abigail Orok, reinforced the notion that there are no shortcuts in the export business, emphasizing the adherence to proper procedures and certification for export products. She affirmed that success in export endeavors demands diligence and a commitment to excellence.
Additionally, Mrs. Anie Iton, a resource person, underscored the significance of value addition to products before export, emphasizing the pivotal role of adding value to enhance competitiveness in the global market.
NEPC’s call for stringent quality standards and thorough market understanding resonates as a critical factor for global export success, cautioning Nigerian exporters against complacency and underscoring the imperative of continuous training and information acquisition to bolster their competitiveness on the global stage.
