Police Reject N4m Bribe from Drug Dealers, Earns Commendation

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has lauded the courage of police officers for refusing a N4 million bribe offered by drug dealers during an investigation.

The commendation comes after the police tactical team, led by SP Rilwan Kasumu, attached to Area K, Marogbo, Lagos State Command, rejected the hefty bribe while probing a case of drug peddling and unlawful possession of ammunition, according to the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

The incident unfolded when the team apprehended Esther Newman Obiekezie, also known as Candy, at her base in Ilogbo Lagos on February 6, 2024, seizing a substantial amount of the illicit drug “ice” and AK-47 live ammunition.

During the investigation, Akete Esther and Oke Okebalam of Ajamgbadi Lagos visited the police station in Ijanikin, attempting to secure the release of Esther and offering the N4 million bribe. They also requested that the police refrain from disrupting their illegal drug peddling business.

In a display of integrity, the police officer confiscated the cash, marked it as evidence, and detained the duo for further scrutiny and legal action.

IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s unwavering commitment to employing professional anti-crime strategies and leveraging all available resources to combat criminal activities in Nigeria.
