President Bola Tinubu made a significant move by initiating the construction of 3,112 housing units in the Renewed Hope City in Abuja, aiming to provide decent and affordable housing for Nigerians. Through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, the project is part of a larger effort to deliver 20,000 housing units in the Federal Capital Territory.

Tinubu’s vision extends beyond just housing construction – he aims to create integrated living communities that redefine residential living for people across Nigeria. The plan includes providing well-connected access and internal roads, reliable electricity, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions to enhance the quality of life for residents. The President emphasized the importance of increasing the sense of community, improving citizen health and productivity, and reducing pressure on urban centers.

Furthermore, President Tinubu recognizes the economic potential of housing as a catalyst for inclusive growth. Acknowledging the housing deficit in Nigeria, his administration is determined to address the challenge with boldness and urgency. The plan involves promoting collaborations through Public Private Partnerships, attracting domestic and foreign investments, and designing incentive schemes to stimulate economic growth and job creation.

In an effort to break the barriers to success, the President has taken the historic decision to separate the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development from Works. This move is aimed at aligning the ministry fully towards tackling the nation’s massive housing problem.

The President also announced the commencement of 200 housing unit constructions in 12 states as Renewed Hope Estates, with plans for groundbreaking ceremonies in the 12 locations. Furthermore, Tinubu expressed joy over the development of Renewed Hope Cities in Kano, Lagos, and Abuja, under various funding arrangements. He also commended the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development’s plan to kickstart a National Urban and Slum Upgrading Programme covering 26 sites nationwide.

In the coming weeks, the President will lay the groundwork for a similar project to deliver 2,500 housing units at the Ibeju–Lekki coastal city in Lagos, demonstrating cross-subsidization by providing a portion of the housing units at concessionary rates to low and medium-income Nigerians, effectively catering to a wider spectrum of the population.

As President Tinubu leads Nigeria into a new era of housing development, his commitment to providing decent and affordable housing for all remains unwavering.
