The House of Representatives has made a historic decision to honor its former Speaker, Ghali Na’Abba, by naming the National Assembly complex after him. This poignant resolution was reached following the presentation of a motion by Rep. Aliyu Madaki (NNPP-Kano) during a plenary session in Abuja on Thursday.
In his impassioned motion titled “Need to immortalise former Speaker, Ghali Na’Abba by naming the National Assembly Service Commission building after him,” Madaki highlighted Na’Abba’s pivotal role as a member of the House at the onset of the fourth Republic in 1999.
Madaki eloquently articulated Na’Abba’s tenure as an influential and courageous Speaker of the House from 1999 to 2003, emphasizing his dynamic and outspoken pursuit of legislative independence. He praised Na’Abba’s avant-garde approach to steering the House, lauding his unwavering commitment to legislative autonomy.
During the plenary session, Madaki shed light on Na’Abba’s unwavering efforts to ensure the independence of the legislature, notably through meticulous scrutiny of the budgetary framework and a series of other pivotal measures.
The motion was unanimously adopted by the House, cementing its resolve to immortalize Na’Abba’s legacy by naming the National Assembly Service Commission complex after him. The matter has been subsequently referred to the Senate for concurrence, signifying a collective acknowledgment of Na’Abba’s unparalleled contribution to the legislative landscape.
The passing of this resolution comes against the backdrop of Mr. Na’Abba’s unfortunate demise on September 27, 2023, in Abuja at the age of 65.
This landmark decision by the House of Representatives stands as a testament to Na’Abba’s enduring impact on Nigeria’s political sphere and his indelible legacy as a venerable statesman.
