The team, deeply affected by the news, observed a moment of silence to honor the departed souls.
Nigeria’s thrilling victory over South Africa secured their spot in the tournament’s final, but the jubilation was overshadowed by the sad news of the fans’ passing. Among those who lost their lives were prominent individuals such as Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, and Samuel, a serving corps member in Adamawa State. The loss also extended to other regions in Nigeria, with individuals such as Ayuba Abdullahi of Kwara State University and Mikail Osundiji of Olomoore area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, leaving behind grieving families and communities.
The tragic incident also reached beyond national borders, as Osondu Nwoye, a businessman originally from Anambra and based in Cote d’Ivoire, collapsed inside the stadium and subsequently passed away in a hospital.
During a somber team meeting, team captain Ahmed Musa relayed the heartbreaking news to his teammates. Musa led the team in a solemn moment of reflection as they paid their respects to the departed fans.
