Senator Oshiomhole Urges Implementation of N35,000 Wage Award or Face Unrest

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has issued a stern warning to governments at all levels, insisting that there should be no peace for any entity failing to execute the N35,000 wage increase mandated by the Federal Government. The interim wage award, sanctioned by the Bola Tinubu administration in response to the subsidy removal impact, is intended for all federal government workers on the payroll for six months.
The approval followed extensive consultations between the Federal Government and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) last year. During an appearance on Channels Television, Oshiomhole emphasized that the wage increase must be adhered to by all levels of government and the private sector.
Expressing puzzlement over any state government’s failure to implement the agreement, the former Labour leader and ex-governor of Edo asserted that the N35,000 raise should be extended beyond federal employees. He highlighted that federal and state employees utilize the same markets and stressed that the labor force, both public and private, collectively mobilized for a general strike prior to the grant.
Oshiomhole firmly stated that the NLC’s role is not to merely lament but to advocate for the realization of the agreed-upon rights. He challenged any non-compliant government to face the consequences, stating, “Any government that refuses to implement the N35,000 is not entitled to peace. Thatโ€™s my view.”
