Gambia’s Local Contractors Take the Lead in Road Construction Projects

The Gambia’s Minister of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure, Ebrima Sillah, announced that local contractors have been awarded six out of the nine ongoing road construction projects. The aim is to bolster the involvement of Gambian engineers in this pivotal sector.

During a visit to ongoing road construction projects in the North Bank and West Coast Regions, Minister Sillah emphasized the importance of engaging with local communities and assessing the progress and challenges faced by the contractors. He expressed optimism that most of the projects will be completed by June 2024, highlighting the potential for enhanced transportation and economic opportunities.

The Chief of Jokadou District, Mr. Alpha Khan, confirmed that those affected by the road projects in his district have been duly compensated. He also underscored the positive impact of the Numi Hakalang road on the accessibility of villages and the transportation of agricultural produce.

Gibril Loum, a project manager and contractor, emphasized the commitment to not only building roads but also training Gambian youth in road construction engineering. Furthermore, Mrs. Marie Senghor, a Gambian engineer involved in a road construction project, lauded the government’s support in providing her with the opportunity to demonstrate her skills.

Additionally, the ongoing construction of the Gunjur Beach road is expected to revitalize economic activities in the area, particularly in facilitating access to fish landing sites. However, there are calls for the government to urgently consider other feeder roads that are crucial for connecting remote villages to the main highway.

The government’s decision to prioritize local contractors signifies a significant step towards empowering local expertise and fostering infrastructure development. As these road construction projects near completion, The Gambia looks forward to reaping the benefits of improved transportation networks and economic growth.
