The Nigerian Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, recently addressed the issue of cyberbullying directed at Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, following Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Ivory Coast. In a statement released by Enoh’s media aide, Diana-Mary Tiku Nsan, the minister expressed his concern and support for Iwobi in the face of online harassment.
Enoh emphasized that the Ministry of Sports Development has previously taken a stand against bullying of athletes and reiterated the need to address the mistreatment of sportsmen and women, particularly in relation to competition outcomes. The AFCON 2023 final resulted in Iwobi being subjected to disparaging comments on social media, prompting him to withdraw from those platforms.
“I am aware of what is happening on social media, and as a ministry, this is not the first time we are going to make a statement against bullying, not just you but our sportsmen and women in general who are exposed to bullying due to the outcome of competitions,” said Enoh. “We are concerned about how our sportsmen and women are treated.”
Iwobi, who confirmed his departure from social media following the final game, received words of encouragement from Enoh, who commended the midfielder for his efforts and assured him of the country’s pride in his performance.
“You did your best for your country, and I am proud of you. The leadership and the rest of the country are proud of you,” Enoh told Iwobi. “Those who are not are in the far minority and do not speak for the rest of our country, so just be strong.”
Enoh also reminded Iwobi of his significant contribution to the team that secured a silver medal at AFCON 2023, highlighting the accomplishment of ending a 23-year medal drought for Nigeria in the tournament.
In offering his support to Iwobi, the minister’s words served as a powerful rebuke against cyberbullying and a testament to the nation’s appreciation for its athletes’ dedication and achievements.
