A former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi, Chika Nwoba, has been remanded in a correctional center for alleged defamation.

Nwoba, who is also a social media handler, appeared in court on Tuesday to face a three-count charge of conspiracy, false publication, and defamation.

The arrest came after a petition by the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Oguzor Offia-Nwali, with the prosecutor, ASP Chinagorom Eze, revealing that the defendant was arrested following the petition.

Nwoba and others at large allegedly conspired on February 6 in Abakaliki to commit felony, including threat to life and publishing false information, leading to charges punishable under the Criminal Code of Ebonyi State.

Mr. C.N. Ufufu, counsel to Nwoba, submitted a bail application citing the bailable nature of the offences, which the prosecutor opposed.

Despite the bail application, the magistrate, Mrs. Lilian Ogodo, declared the court’s lack of jurisdiction and referred the matter to the high court, adjourning the case until March 1, 2024.
