Liberia’s President Boakai Embarks on Diplomatic Visit to Ghana

Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has embarked on a significant two-day official working visit to Ghana, marking his first foreign trip since assuming office on January 30, 2024. During this visit, President Boakai is set to engage in discussions with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo on matters of mutual interest and regional affairs.

In a letter addressed to the 55th Legislature, President Boakai communicated his temporary absence from Liberia, entrusting the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Sylvester M. Grigsby, to chair the Cabinet in collaboration with Vice President Jeremiah Koung. The Executive Mansion did not disclose the composition of President Boakai’s official delegation.

This diplomatic tour unfolds against a backdrop of unrest in Liberia, as the wives of soldiers from the Armed Forces of Liberia staged a protest on February 12, demanding better living conditions and the resignation of the newly-appointed Minister of Defense, Retired Major General Prince C. Johnson, III. Minister Johnson promptly resigned in response to the demonstration, which occurred on the same day as the somewhat subdued observance of Armed Forces Day by the government.
