The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the disruption of the rerun election in Enugu South 1 state constituency by suspected thugs. The electoral body reported the disruption through an official statement on Wednesday. The commission had scheduled February 14 for the by-election and rerun polls that were suspended in Taraba and Enugu states.

Although no casualties were reported, INEC stated that election materials were destroyed, and voters were prevented from casting their votes. The commission also mentioned that the supplementary election for Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency of Taraba State was unfolding peacefully.

“A report from our Enugu State office indicates that hoodlums have disrupted the court-ordered re-run election in the Enugu South 1 State Constituency. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but election materials were destroyed, and voters were obstructed from casting their votes. Our officials have been safely evacuated with assistance from security agencies,” the statement read. “In contrast, the supplementary election in the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency of Taraba State is unfolding peacefully across three local government areas.”
