The Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) and the National Advocacy Platform (NAP) are increasing pressure on the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to recognize the authority of the Speaker of the National Assembly, Catherine Gotani Hara, regarding the status of the Leader of the Opposition.
In separate statements, EAM and NAP have urged the DPP to avoid causing disruption in parliament and instead wait for a conclusive resolution through the court system.
On Monday, chaos erupted in parliament when DPP lawmakers contested Hara’s decision to allow Nankhumwa to continue as Leader of the Opposition due to an active court order.
DPP legislators wanted their recent appointee, Mary Thom Navicha, to respond to the State of the Nation Address (SONA) instead.
As a result, Hara expelled 25 MPs for protesting against Nankhumwa’s response to President Chakwera’s SONA. Subsequently, all DPP MPs boycotted parliamentary proceedings in solidarity with the ejected MPs.
EAM’s General Secretary, Francis Mkandawire, condemned the actions of the DPP lawmakers, urging them to allow the court to resolve the matter and calling on the courts to prioritize its urgency to restore order in Parliament.
NAP’s national chairperson, Benedicto Kondowe, challenged the DPP to transcend politics and address their differences, emphasizing the need to prioritize issues affecting Malawians and uphold the rule of law.
Kondowe also stressed the significance of both the State of the Nation Address and the budget statement and urged the courts to expedite the resolution of the matter, emphasizing the judiciary’s responsibility to promptly address issues in pursuit of justice.
