Liberia: Prophet Key Released on Bond After Court Drama

The controversial Liberian social media talk show host, Nayaborqua Oldpa Yeazeahn, also known as Prophet Key, narrowly escaped jail time when he was released on a personal recognizance bond by the Monrovia City Court Magistrate on Thursday, February 15, 2024.

Prophet Key had been facing charges of criminal coercion, menacing, and disorderly conduct filed by Liberia’s Cultural Ambassador, Julie Endee. After appearing before Magistrate L. Ben Barcon and initially being detained, Prophet Key later pleaded not guilty to the charges.

During the court proceedings, both the prosecution and defense presented their arguments. The prosecution requested a Writ Ne Exeat Republica to prevent Prophet Key from leaving the country and for the defendant to post a valid criminal appearance bond. In response, the defense urged the court to dismiss the prosecution’s request, emphasizing that Prophet Key had no intention of evading justice and should be granted personal recognizance and a continuance.

Ultimately, Magistrate Barcon denied the prosecution’s request, granted the defendant a continuance, and released Prophet Key on personal recognizance as per the defense’s request.

In an interview following his release, Prophet Key commended the police for their professionalism during the proceedings and maintained his innocence, urging the public to uphold belief in the judiciary system.

Cultural Ambassador Julie Endee also expressed faith in the Liberian judicial system and pledged to see the case through to its conclusion, emphasizing the importance of respecting each other’s rights regardless of status.

The release of Prophet Key led to tensions at the Supreme Court’s premises, with supporters of both Prophet Key and Julie Endee nearly engaging in a physical altercation, requiring intervention from the Liberian National Police.

The courtroom was filled with spectators eager to witness the controversial talk show host in person, many of whom had previously only seen him on social media platforms.

The unfolding events showcased the drama and intensity of the Liberian legal landscape, drawing attention from both local and international audiences.
