Former Arsenal winger, Willian, recently disclosed that he faced criticism for leaving the club, emphasizing the priority of his faith above all else. In a candid interview, he expressed his dissatisfaction during his time at Arsenal, ultimately choosing to prioritize his happiness and departure from the team.

Willian’s unexpected transfer from Chelsea to Arsenal on a free move in 2020 raised eyebrows in the football world. Upon joining the Premier League North London club on a three-year contract, the 35-year-old encountered a challenging period.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Willian candidly shared his reasons for leaving Arsenal, stating, “When I left Arsenal, everyone knows it wasn’t good. It was a difficult year for me.” He further revealed that he proactively proposed to terminate his contract, despite having two years remaining, due to his unhappiness at the club. Willian faced criticism for this decision, with people labeling him as ‘crazy’ for relinquishing a lucrative contract.

Despite the backlash, Willian remained resolute in his decision, affirming, “But I don’t think about money. I know money is important, for sure. But it’s not the first thing in my life.” He attributed his departure to a prioritization of faith, family, and personal happiness over financial gain. Echoing this, he emphasized, “For me, God first. Then my family, then football. Then the other things.”

Remarkably, Willian’s bold choice led to a positive outcome. “I turned the situation around and, now, three years later I am at this club [Fulham], enjoying myself. It’s an amazing club, to be honest,” he stated, signifying his contentment at Fulham following his departure from Arsenal.

Willian’s story serves as a testament to the complexities and personal sacrifices often involved in professional football, offering insight into the unwavering resilience and unwavering dedication of athletes in pursuing their happiness and fulfillment both on and off the pitch.
