The aftermath of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in Edo State on Saturday has led to a deepening crisis, as three candidates now lay claim to the party’s ticket for the upcoming governorship election slated for September 21, 2024.
Anamero Sunday Dekeri was declared the winner of the primary election on Saturday night, adding to the complexity of the situation. The emergence of Dekeri brings the number of candidates claiming victory from the primary election to three.
The primary election committee, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, and the Returning Officer, Ugboaja Stanley Uzoamaka, initially declared Honourable Dennis Idahosa and Senator Monday Okpebholo as the candidates of the APC for the election.
Uzodinma declared Idahosa as the winner in Benin City, whereas Uzoamaka declared Okpebholo as the winner at Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s residence, each with a substantial difference in vote count.
In contrast, Mr. Ojo Babatunde, the Spokesman of the local government returning officers, announced Dekeri as the winner of the primary election, surpassing his closest rival, Idahosa.
Dekeri, who represents Etsako Federal constituency in the House of Representatives, stated that he acknowledges the confidence reposed in him by the party members and will not take it for granted. He urged unity among the aspirants to secure victory for the APC in the gubernatorial election, emphasizing that there are no victors or vanquished in the primary election.
Additionally, Dekeri thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support and commitment to upholding the democratic process, creating a level playing field for all contestants. He also commended the National Working Committee, State Working Committee, and party executives and members at all levels for their dedication to the party’s growth and development.
The emergence of a third candidate has added a new dimension to the APC crisis in Edo State, intensifying the political landscape ahead of the governorship election.
