The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Edo State has strongly criticized the assault on its members by political hooligans during the collation and announcement of results for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election. The union is demanding redress for the violent incident, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice.

Edo State NUJ chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, voiced the union’s stance at an impromptu press conference in Benin City. The attack, perpetrated by individuals purportedly allied with a governorship aspirant, targeted journalists, electoral officers, and party affiliates, causing mayhem at the result collation venue. Alenkhe vehemently condemned the assault as repugnant, disgraceful, and intolerable, urging the State Police Command to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The NUJ issued a seven-day ultimatum to the APC, calling for an unreserved apology, replacement of journalists’ damaged equipment, and coverage of medical expenses for those injured during the attack. Furthermore, the union emphasized the importance of apprehending and prosecuting the assailants, imploring the management of the hotel where the incident occurred to provide CCTV footage to aid the investigation.

Alenkhe firmly asserted that the Edo State election slated for September 21, 2024, should not devolve into a “do-or-die” affair. He highlighted the NUJ’s readiness to engage in a media campaign against the APC if the stipulated demands are not met. The union’s uncompromising stance underscores the imperative of defending press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists in the course of their duties.
