The world mourns the tragic loss of Herbert Wigwe, former CEO of Access Corporation, alongside his wife, son, and friend, who perished in a helicopter crash on February 9, 2024. As tributes pour in, the legacy of Wigwe’s impactful life and his relentless commitment to progress and compassion come to the forefront.

Amidst the outpouring of grief, false claims regarding Wigwe’s involvement with the defunct Intercontinental Bank and its founder, Dr. Erastus Akingbola, surfaced. However, thorough investigation revealed no connection between Wigwe and the alleged smear campaign, shedding light on the integrity of his character and leadership.

Wigwe, along with Aigboje Aig Imoukhuede, took over Access Bank in 2002 and orchestrated its turnaround, culminating in the acquisition of Intercontinental Bank in 2012. Under Wigwe’s stewardship, Access Bank experienced extraordinary growth, positioning it as one of Africa’s largest retail banks in terms of customer base and assets.

Beyond his accomplishments in banking, Wigwe was a staunch advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, a supporter of vulnerable children and internationally displaced persons, and a driver of Nigeria and Africa’s development. His visionary initiative, Wigwe University, stood as a testament to his unwavering commitment to education and community development.

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo provided insight into Wigwe’s last moments, highlighting his dedication to education, sustainability, and empowering the youth. Despite naysayers attempting to tarnish Wigwe’s legacy, the world stands united in honoring his profound impact and mourning his untimely passing.

As we bid farewell to “The Fearless One,” let us honor Herbert Wigwe’s memory and the enduring imprint he leaves on the world.
