Nigeria Still Struggles 21 Years After ‘Jaga Jaga’ – Eedris Abdulkareem

Nigerian music icon, Eedris Abdulkareem, has voiced his dismay over the enduring socio-economic challenges in Nigeria, two decades after releasing his provocative track, ‘Jaga Jaga.’ In a recent appearance on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Abdulkareem decried the worsening conditions in the country, citing a sharply depreciating currency and widespread hunger.

Expressing his poignant observations, Abdulkareem highlighted the alarming exchange rate of the Dollar, which has reportedly surged to N2,000, exacerbating the plight of ordinary citizens. He juxtaposed this against previous administrations, recalling how the exchange rate was significantly lower during the tenure of former president Goodluck Jonathan but has since skyrocketed under the leadership of Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu.

In a poignant moment, Abdulkareem remarked, “Nigeria still Jaga Jaga 21 years later. Hunger everywhere, people are dying. How will people survive when Dollar is N1600? Goodluck Jonathan left it at N198. [Muhammadu] Buhari took it to N300, [Bola] Tinubu skyrocketed it to N1600. Dollar is going to N2000. So how do you want common people to survive in this country? Even the Yorubas they were shouting ‘Emilokan’, they are the ones dying of hunger now.”

The artist’s impassioned comments serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians, leaving a poignant resonance that reverberates far beyond the nation’s borders.
