The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has issued a critical call for global vigilance against the threat of meningitis. Dr. Muyi Aina, the Executive Director of the agency, emphasized the urgency of vaccination and early symptom detection to combat this life-threatening infection.
In an exclusive interview in Abuja, Dr. Aina described meningitis as a perilous infection that triggers inflammation of the membranes enveloping the brain and spinal cord. He highlighted common symptoms including high fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and confusion.
“Vigilance is paramount for early detection and treatment,” stressed Dr. Aina, underlining the significance of vaccination in preventing the disease. He emphasized, “Vaccination is the most effective way to shield individuals from meningitis and can be life-saving.”
Dr. Aina underscored that vaccination coupled with early symptom recognition will safeguard Nigerians from this debilitating disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified skipping vaccinations as a major risk factor for meningitis. It further notes that viral meningitis primarily affects children under five, while bacterial meningitis is prevalent among individuals under 20 years old.
