In a recent interview with the National President of the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), Opeyemi Ajayi, it was revealed that Nigerian cinemas generated an impressive N1.2 billion in revenue in January 2024. This marks a significant 46% increase from the N819 million recorded in January 2023, demonstrating the industry’s resilience in the face of economic challenges.
Ajayi highlighted that the total attendance during this period reached 322,833, indicating a strong viewership despite ongoing economic hardships. Despite the rising cost of living and food inflation reaching an all-time high of 35.42%, the Nigerian cinema industry has managed to adapt and thrive.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy amidst nationwide protests in states such as Kogi, Niger, and Oyo, where citizens have been demonstrating against the escalating cost of living. Despite these challenges, the Nigerian cinema industry has shown its ability to not only withstand economic uncertainties but also flourish.
The remarkable growth in revenue and viewership in January 2024 reflects the industry’s resilience and its capacity to provide entertainment and escapism, offering a bright spot in an otherwise difficult economic landscape.
